Retribution v Rehabilitation (Stage C (Concept Development) presentation)

“… maintaining family contact while in prison reduces isolation and the pain of imprisonment for both prisoners and families, and can help to prevent prisoners re-offending on release.” Following on from the previous presentation, further development have been made into the concept as part of the Stage C of the Interior Design Job Book 9Concept Development Stage). In this presentation we are looking into the finalised concept of Panopticon as a form of a resettlement prison. “…disperse the stigma of punishment but also help successful rehabilitation and decrease re-offending.” In the late 18th century an English Philosopher Jeremy Bentham invented a Panopticon Prison and the first Surveillance was born. Panopticon derived from the Greek words all seeing. The idea behind was to build a unit with a centre tower from where the guards will observe the prisoners without being seen. Bentham was also the first one to suggest to place more than one inmate in one cell to help rehabilitation process. However, I would like to explore the idea of de-constructing of the Panopticon in the way that rather than all seeing from the surveillance and control point of view but to make it more open and transparent to the community in which the resettlement prison will be located. I believe that allowing families to visit their loved ones in such prisons for longer period of time will hopefully not only help disperse the stigma of punishment but also help successful rehabilitation and decrease re-offending. This presentation also covers the introduction of the client brief, a short discussion about the spacial requirements and the design brief. A finalised location...

First Assignment of the final year

This presentation is a brief evaluation of the previous academic projects at the Arts University. The purpose of this assignment was to analyse and critically evaluate own skills, strengths and weaknesses through discussion of how these will progress further to help inform the Final Major Project. It discusses the very initial idea which of course naturally will change as research into the chosen subject continues. Click below to watch the full video....
